What is Manufacturing? (Air Compressor Guide)

Manufacturing industry refers to the era of mechanical industry, the use of certain resources (materials, energy, equipment, tools, capital, technology, information and manpower, etc.), in accordance with the market requirements, through the manufacturing process, transformed into a large-scale tools for people to use and make use of, industrial products and consumer products of life industry.

Manufacturing directly reflects the level of productivity of a country and is an important factor in distinguishing between developing and developed countries, and manufacturing occupies an important share of the national economy of developed countries.

According to the material form used in production, manufacturing industry can be divided into discrete manufacturing industry and process manufacturing industry.

At the heart of manufacturing lies the concept of productivity, a key metric that directly reflects a country’s economic prowess. Manufacturing is not only a measure of a nation’s industrial advancement but also a significant factor that distinguishes between developing and developed countries. In developed nations, the manufacturing sector commands a substantial portion of the national economy, underlining its vital contribution to overall prosperity.

As we delve deeper into the realm of manufacturing, it becomes evident that the reliable and effective generation of compressed air is pivotal. This brings us to the realm of air compressors, a cornerstone of modern manufacturing processes. Air compressors play a central role in producing and maintaining the high-pressure air needed to drive various pneumatic tools and machinery, contributing significantly to enhancing productivity, reducing labor-intensive processes, and ensuring consistent quality across manufacturing operations.

In the subsequent discussion, we will explore the key attributes of air compressors, their types, applications, and their critical role in supporting diverse manufacturing activities. Let’s delve into the world of air compressors and their integration within the intricate tapestry of the manufacturing industry.

1.Piston air compressor

Piston air compressor consists of crank, crankshaft, connecting rod, piston, cylinder, air inlet valve and pressure valve, through the crankshaft, and the rotation of the piston in the downstroke process, the air is sucked into the cylinder by opening the air valve. During the upstroke, the air is compressed, the exhaust valve is opened and the compressed air is discharged into the air reservoir. According to the type of piston, it is divided into oil-free lubrication and oil lubrication.

The characteristics of piston compressors are as follows:

  1. Low to high pressure: 0.5MPa to more than 20.0MPa
  2. Low flow rate to power input
  3. Low cost of ownership for systems less than 22KW, low maintenance costs for small power systems, high maintenance costs for large power systems; in order to obtain the best performance, frequent testing and maintenance is required.

2.Screw air compressor

Screw air compressor has a series of unique advantages such as simple structure, reliable work and convenient operation, and thus has been widely valued by the industry since its birth. After years of development, screw compressors have been widely used in the flow rate of 1-60m^3/min and the pressure range of <=2.0MPa, and the occupancy rate in the industrial field has been close to 100% (almost completely replacing the piston compressors), of which more than 99% are twin-screw compressors.

Screw compressors are classified as follows:

  1. According to the number of screws are divided into twin-screw air compressors and single-screw air compressors.
  2. According to whether there is lubricating oil in the compression process is divided into oil-free screw air compressor and oil-injected screw air compressor.
What air compressor is suitable for manufacturing industry
  • Single Screw Air Compressor

Single screw air compressor originated in the 1960s, from the name, the air compressor is characterised by only one screw rotor. In reality, however, the single screw compressor has three rotating axes, i.e., it consists of a screw rotor and two planetary gears that are perpendicular to the screw rotor. As a member of the screw compressor family, the single-screw compressor has similar advantages to the twin-screw compressor, but due to several industrial difficulties, it has not been popularised on a large scale.

The characteristics of single screw compressor are as follows:

  1. Medium pressure (0.5-1.0MPa)
  2. Medium flow rate to power input
  3. 15-220kw between the system efficiency and low cost
  4. Compared with the piston compressor, the start-up costs are moderate
  5. High maintenance costs compared to piston compressors
  6. Low wear and tear compared to sliding vane compressors and piston compressors.
  • Twin Screw Air Compressor

The twin-screw air compressor was born in the 1930s. It consists of a pair of rotors arranged in parallel and meshing with each other. During operation, one rotor rotates clockwise and the other counterclockwise, and in the process of meshing with each other, air is compressed to the required pressure.

Twin-screw air compressor with high mechanical reliability and excellent power balance, operation and maintenance is also very convenient, many scientific research institutions and manufacturing enterprises after a lot of theoretical research and production practice of twin-screw air compressor in the 1970s has tended to be perfect, and gained a great market share, is the leading product in the current market. At present, the screw air compressors produced by famous air compressor manufacturers at home and abroad are all screw air compressors.

The working cycle of twin-screw air compressor can be divided into suction process (including suction and closure process), compression process and exhaust process. As the rotor rotates, each pair of meshes completes the same work cycle one after another.

The characteristics of twin-screw air compressor are as follows:

  • Medium pressure (0.5-1.0MPa)
  • Medium flow rate to power input
  • High efficiency and low cost for systems between 15-220KW.
  • Medium start-up costs compared to piston compressors
  • High maintenance costs compared to piston compressors
  • Sliding vane compressors are less resistant to wear and tear than piston compressors.

3. Centrifugal air compressor

Centrifugal air compressor consists of 2-3 shaped impellers with a speed of 5000-15000r/min.

Centrifugal air compressor has the following characteristics:

  • Pressure range 0.4-1.3MPa
  • Highest flow rate up to power input
  • Highest energy efficiency and energy savings
  • High initial installation cost
  • Low maintenance costs, parts can last up to 15 years
  • Completely oil-free

Five manufacturing industry trends to watch

The need for air compressors for the manufacturing industry

Air compressor is a versatile mechanical equipment widely used in various manufacturing enterprises, playing a crucial role in many production processes.

Air compressor equipment is an indispensable industrial tool in modern manufacturing. Its primary function is to compress air into high-pressure gas and supply it to various end-use equipment.

In the manufacturing process, many processes rely on air compressor equipment to provide high-pressure gas, such as spray painting, pneumatic transport, pneumatic tools, and more. Therefore, the stable operation of air compressor equipment has a significant impact on production efficiency and product quality for manufacturing enterprises.

  • Firstly

the stable operation of air compressor equipment ensures the continuity of the production process. Manufacturing enterprises often need to operate for long periods, such as 24-hour continuous production, relying on reliable air compressor equipment to provide a continuous supply of high-pressure gas.

Once the air compressor equipment malfunctions, it can lead to production line downtime, resulting in significant economic losses. Especially for many small and medium-sized enterprises, due to insufficient financial strength and poor management, they lack backup machines and neglect equipment maintenance.

Air compressors are often left unrepaired unless they completely fail, which invisibly reduces production efficiency and causes unnecessary production losses. Therefore, the management and maintenance of air compressor equipment are crucial, aiming to minimize failures and downtime.

  • Secondly

The operational efficiency of air compressor equipment directly affects the production efficiency and costs of manufacturing enterprises. Well-functioning air compressor equipment not only supports the normal gas production needs of users but also reduces energy consumption, lowers production costs, and enhances the market competitiveness of enterprises’ products.

Hence, manufacturing enterprises need to focus on the energy efficiency and operational efficiency of air compressor equipment, and take corresponding measures for management and optimization.
